In celebration of Juneteenth, Galleria Dallas partners with a local artist annually. This year, we’ve commissioned a T-Shirt design from noted landscape artist MOM that will be available free of purchase beginning Saturday, June 15 while supplies last.
MOM, aka Brooke Chaney, is a contemporary and multidisciplinary artist whose work features abstracted landscapes rendered with acrylic and latex paint.
MOM’s thoughtful shirt design is heavily inspired by the official Juneteenth flag and the history of the holiday.
“As a landscape artist, I was immediately drawn to the flag and how the design’s bisection resembles a singular hill and the sunburst shape evokes a sunset or sunrise,” MOM said. “I chose to create an emblem utilizing those elements in addition to a winding road that travels up the hill reaching the sunburst. This imagery encapsulates the journey from struggle to triumph, mirroring the uphill climb toward freedom and equality.”
The two stars on the rim of the design are a nod to Texas, the place of origin for Juneteenth. MOM hopes that wearing the design “will imbue the wearer with a sense of pride, strength and connection to the rich tapestry of Black history.”
Juneteenth, which was made a federal holiday in 2021, commemorates June 19, 1865, the day slaves in Texas first heard the new of President Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation – nearly two and a half years after it was signed.
MOM’s shirt design serves as a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring quest for justice and equality. Galleria Dallas is committed to being an integral part of the community and celebrates art, artists and the discussions their works can initiate.
Additionally, we sourced locally owned Instant Imprints Plano to print shirts featuring the exclusive design. These shirts will be available for visitors on Level 1, near Tommy Bahama while supplies last. MOM will be on-site to personally distribute shirts from 10-11am on Saturday, June 15.
