Evening gown in violet satin made for Elizabeth Taylor in her Passion perfume advertisements and commercials.
Nolan Miller, Designer, (American, 1933-2012)
From the collection of Adam Seirafi
This violet duchess satin gown was designed by Nolan Miller for Elizabeth Taylor for her Passion Perfume campaign in 1987. Elizabeth wore this gown for her first Passion perfume photoshoot with Norman Parkinson, as well as for the recordings for all of her Passion perfume advertisements and commercials. The color is no coincidence, as violet was Elizabeth's favorite color. Elizabeth wore this gown a second time in 1988 to the Starlight Humanitarian Awards which were honoring Barry Manilow that year. For her second outing in this gown, Nolan added silk violets with foliage to the shoulders, embedded in between the two purple satin bows that adorn each shoulder. Nolan made Elizabeth several gowns with this same romantic cut in various colors and fabrics. These gowns were inspired by the period costumes Nolan made for Elizabeth in her TV movie "Poker Alice."

Nolan Miller, Designer, (American, 1933-2012)
From the collection of Adam Seirafi

On "Dynasty" Joan's character Alexis throws a "Black and White" charity ball but breaks the black and white dress code by wearing vibrant red. This intricate red velvet gown has satin details at the shoulders and has a long pleated train also in red satin. Nolan's inspiration for Joan wearing a red gown to a black and white ball dates back to the 1936 Mayfair Ball hosted by Carole Lombard. In this case Carole designated that all ladies must wear white gowns, but Norma Shearer showed up in blood red. Carole was not pleased to say the least.

Coat in hand painted quilted silk
Michael Katz, Designer, (American, 1946-2019)
Courtesy of Jan Strimple
Hand painted quilted silk coat trimmed in black twist cord. Signed at the inside hemline.
I first met artist/designer Michael Katz in New York while modeling for Loreal in an international presentation titled Loreal on Broadway. This 1980 spectacle was staged for hair industry professionals, using a mix of 36 Broadway dancers, hair cut models, and hair style models wearing New York designers original samples. Micheal was in the audience with two of his friends at the invitation of the late Eve Orton, the show's Fashion Director and former Fashion Editor of Harper's Bazaar. Allow me a moment to set up Michael's reaction to seeing me on stage and our "instant love affair" that found him running backstage to meet me after the show. Loreal cast the show with models who met the specs they needed for hair design. Consequently, many of them lacked the height needed to carry off the dramatic pieces that Eve (with her top notch connections) had secured for the show. That proved to be a critical communication flaw that catapulted me into the spotlight, resulting in my 38 year friendship with Michael.
When Eve saw all the models for the first time, she didn't hide her disappointment with much grace. She lined up the models by height and asked each of us to walk for her. Being the tallest, I walked last. As I stepped back into line she pointed her elegantly manicured digit my way and loudly proclaimed "YOU .... YOU WILL BE MY STAAAAAR! WHAT IS YOUR NAME?"
Like a good mid-western girl, my ego has always been under control. I grew exceptionally tall and was smart enough to do something with this gift of height. I realized I was the only one tall enough to wear the "wow" pieces and understood that she didn't want them overpowering the shorter girls, so that's how I got to be her star. But that didn't stop me from having some fun with this opportunity and working it for all it was worth!
So, in each fashion scene that took place between hair cutting and styling scenes, I had the starring role. I recall the strength it took to wear a 40 pound two piece beaded plaid dress from Michael Vollbracht in the Brigadoon scene and glide across the stage as though it weighed nothing. My favorite memory was closing the show strutting and dancing to One (Singular Sensation) from A Chorus Line. I can't tell you what I wore, but I'll never forget what it felt like to be the center point of a pack of dozens of Broadway dancers behind me doing the kicks from Chorus Line. A-MAZING!
Barely off stage after our curtain call, 3 colorful characters swept up to me and wanted to know who I was. They were gushing. Mind you, walking the runways of the world was not on my horizon at that time as for those of you that know my story, you'll understand when I share that I had not yet met designer Bob Mackie. That would come a year later, as would me securing a NYC agent and my resulting foray onto the global catwalks.
I was equally fascinated by these three colorful men as they were by me, and as we chatted I paid very close attention to Kevin Boyce, the dressed-as-a-woman man who could have stepped into any garment I had just worn on stage and delivered it with equal or better drama. Kevin had a models body and a killer walk and you're going to want to remember his name. Paper Magazine lists him as one of the most fascinating Club Kids, he is credited as a pioneer of androgynous chic, and was a regular on the scene at Studio 54. A play is in the works about Kevin's life and untimely death. I can't wait for more people to know and appreciate what an original Kevin was.
From that meeting, Michael and I became fast friends. He was flamboyant, fun, and unapologetically always the center of attention. A year later when I hit the NYC scene as a runway model, we saw each other often. He was evolving a clientele with his work as an artist with gallery showings and as a fabric artist, selling his hand painted fabrics to Halston and Stephen Burrows.
Michael's dinner parties were insane. Sidney Biddle Borrows (aka The Mayflower Madame), Patty Hearst (yes, that Patty Hearst, the grand daughter of Publishing Magnate William Randolph Hearst kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army), and Nikki Haskall (The Nikki Haskall Show, aka Queen of New York's Night LIfe) .. always a wild mix of interesting people.
Michael launched his own line in '88, charmed the press by always showing in his artist loft, and drew the attention of clients as diverse as Mick Jagger, Ivana Trump, and Oprah Winfrey. The Cactus Coat was one of his first pieces and as with all of Michael's creations, it is one of a kind. Exactly like Michael.
We lost Michael unexpectedly in April 2019 to a heart attack. Always a Thoroughly Modern Milly, he was in Miami, felt odd, called an Uber to take him to the hospital, called his sister from the hospital to say how cute the Doctors were that were treating him, and then he didn't answer when she called back. Michael left as he lived: fast and furious. I adored him. This piece means the world to me. In New York, I wore it many times over one of my signature black catsuits. In Dallas, I wore it to the 2018 The Art Ball when an Artic blast blew in and the party was outdoors. Artful pieces transcend trends and can be worn forever.
Michael's pieces are included in The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Art Museum.

Evening coat in black fox fur and studded leather
Bob Mackie, Designer, (American b.1939)
Courtesy of Jan Strimple
Evening coat in alternating panels of black mink fur and leather. The leather panels are adorned in black facetted crystals and the entire coat is trimmed in black fox fur.
This Bob Mackie fur is one of my favorite pieces for a multitude of reasons. First, it was a surprise Christmas gift to me from my husband Dan. On his own accord and without prompting, he arranged this purchase from the New York furrier that created the furs for Bob. Second, because it is designed by Bob Mackie, another love of my life. When Bob learned Dan surprised me with it, his comment was "of course you now own the most impractical fur in the entire collection!" Bob knows well that I always love the unusual piece .. that risk-taking piece .. that piece most store buyers won't buy because they fear it won't sell. With the jet-studded leather strips and fox, this speaks to the core of my taste: glam, but edgy. But most importantly, it speaks to my heart.

Evening coat in black silk taffeta
Bill Blass Ltd., (American, founded, 1970)
Bill Blass, Designer, (American, 1922-2002)
Courtesy of Jan Strimple
Evening coat in black silk taffeta with a bubble hem.
Bill Blass was an iconic American designer who I walked for in the 80's. His clients were all the well-heeled Madison Ave "gals" (as he famously called them) and their equally well-shod sisters across the globe. Before the advent of runway stylists backstage, the designer would stand next to each model before she hit the runway and do the last minute "fluff and adjust" needed to ensure that the garment was worn with the precise panache desired. Bill would do it with a cigarette dangling from his mouth. I couldn't tolerate cigarette smoke, so I held my breath while he was styling me so as to not go into a coughing attack before walking on stage.
For my first Blass show, I came to his casting last minute and was booked for the show. There was a camel colored bias-cut gown and fox trimmed tapestry coat he wanted me to wear, as it matched my then copper-blonde hair. The size 8 pump made of the matching tapestry fabric had already been created to be worn with this look.
Well, Cinderella I am not. Rather, my foot is a size 10.5 .. a small detail that his staff had overlooked. The day before the show, at my fittings, they took the shoe into his workroom and cut across the bottom vamp with a hand saw. Knowing that only the toe of the shoe would be seen by the cameras peaking out from under the gown, I slithered down that runway in his press show wearing a shoe that had no solid bottom on it. Thank God for those years of ballet!
I purchased this Blass black bubble jacket as a collectors item from Nancy Hamon's estate, some of which was gifted to The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary fashion show I produce. For those of you not in the know, Nancy was the wife of Texas wildcatter Jake Hamon (as in the Nancy and Jake L Hamon Building at The Dallas Museum of Arts) and one of the largest benefactors of The Arts in the history of Dallas. They lived a remarkable lifestyle and loved elaborate parties! If only this bubble could talk!

I first met Sonny Morisane when he was an assistant to New York designer Akira. He was quiet, sweet and very easy to like. When he did his own first show and needed models that the press would photograph, we knew he had no money so we all gave him our time because we believed in his talent. He gifted each of us with a duplicate piece from the collection and this was mine.
On his own, he produced only a few collections and they were heavily influenced by Akira's love of bold sleeves

I bought these in Paris at a store on the Left Bank. Kansai was not readily available in the US at that time, and I enjoyed wearing these unique pants. They fueled my constant love of nearly- androgynous clothing, something that certainly balanced out equally strong love of glam!

Rifat Ozbek (British, founded 1983)
Philip Treacy, Designer, (British, b.1966)
Courtesy of Jan Strimple
This original runway sample was created by Philip Treacy for Turkish designer Rifat Ozbek, one of the most under-the-U.S.-radar London based designers Ozbek was a rebel on the global fashion scene, as he adored an artful mix of unlikely patterns, shapes, and ornamentation with influences borrowed from a global grab bag. His was masterful at combining the decorative shapes and symbols from diverse cultures and pairing them with the classic silhouettes of the West. Treacy and Ozbek were friends on the London fashion scene, so theirs was a natural collaboration. Today, Treacy maintains an elite stronghold on millinery design. Ozbek left the fashion industry for interiors with the launch of Yastik, meaning "pillow" in his native Turkey.
In a nod to Ozbek's ideologically mad mixes, I wore this Treacy chapeau to a middle-eastern themed gala in Dallas, pairing it with a simple black ankle length sheath and16 button black kid-skin gloves. The juxtaposition of disparate elements made it great fun. Shocking? Mais, oui. That's what makes fashion fun for the wearer and for others.

Cutaway jacket in paisley silk brocade
Ellis Flyte, Designer, (British, b.1958)
Courtesy of Jan Strimple
As a 1982 grad of London College of Fashion, Ellis Flyte was ready to make her mark. She was a collector of vintage menswear fabrics with a proclivity for costuming, so naturally her first pieces were somewhat androgynous. My short hair fit her vision perfectly, so off to London's famed Carnaby Street we went for her swashbuckling photo shoot. Note her details like lace covered boots, crushed velvet pants, poets blouse, vest of her collected menswear fabric and the vintage revolver in my hand.
I loved her energy and feel as a designer, so I commissioned Ellis to make this custom tail coat for me using this fabric from her vintage collection. Note the sleeve is a bit fuller than our contemporary eye is accustomed to, but that was very much the 80's sleeve, allowing room for a blouse to be under-layered.
Shortly after this shoot, Ellis was hired by Jim Henson (The Muppets) to create the costumes for Henson's 1986 film Labyrinth, for which she won several awards. Take note of the lines of the jacket David Bowie is wearing in this costume shot from Labyrinth. I knew she was the right one for the job!
In 1991 she went back into fashion with design partner Richard Ostell, founding the brand Flyte Ostell. Today she owns Fundu Lagoon, a resort in Tanzia.

Cropped wool knit top in purple adorned in black fringe and tassels. A velveteen heat press design decorates the chest, collar and sleeves.
I spent the 80's decade traveling the fashion capitals of the world for Pret-a-Porter and Haute Couture shows. My flying uniform was a black lycra tank-style catsuit, black thigh-high boots, and an ankle length cashmere coat. In my carry-on was this Gaultier crop sweater. It gave me enough "coverage" to wear with the catsuit while still showing the requisite long-lean-body-line on those runway castings. Just before landing, I'd slip Into one of those tiny plane bathrooms and exit looking fierce with nary a wrinkle. Also loved it for the color relief it offered from my all-black fashion closet. This little sweater has traveled the world!
